Both of these hikes are accessed off of Old Highway 99 north of Alger.  The hike up to and around Squires Lake is 3.7 miles round trip.  One can add an additional 2.2 miles by hiking up a ridge to the south and then hiking up onto the top of Alger Alp, aka Little Baldy; the total elevation gain is 1400 ft.  Meet at 8:30 am at the Chuckanut Drive Park-n-Ride in north Burlington.  Bellingham hikers can pool rides and drive to the trailhead.   From I-5 Southbound, exit on #242, the Nulle Road.  Go under the freeway and you will be on Old Highway 99.  Drive south and the parking lot will be on your left.  From I-5 Northbound take the Alger Exit #240 and drive east to Old 99 in Alger.  Turn left on Old 99 and drive north.  Trail head will be on your right.  You may leave the trailhead when all in your car are safely back.
