As usual, weather, logging, construction or other unexpected conditions might cause changes or cancellations in the following hikes. If you have questions or want information on any of the hikes, call JOAN MELCHER, 360-424-0407, or e-mail  All the hikes are on a Wednesday. Dogs are discouraged on Audubon-sponsored hikes. If dogs are on a hike, they must be on a leash at all times.

Hike-Northern State Recreation Site

April 3: Northern State Recreation Area (Skagit County Parks & Rec)

A gentle 4.9-mile hike with an elevation gain of 239 feet around the grounds of the former mental institution just east of Sedro Wooley. Or extend your options by hiking more of the trails.

No passes are required. Dogs are allowed on a leash.

Sign in at the trailhead at 9:00 a.m. You may leave when your group returns to the car.

Hike - Washington Park & Guemes Channel

Wednesday, April 10, 2024 WASHINGTON PARK AND GUEMES CHANNEL   Self-guided hike/walk. Meet at 9 a.m. in LOT A at Washington Park in Anacortes. To get to Lot A, turn right just at the park entrance. The sign says “Picnic Area” with an arrow pointing to the right. A child’s play area is close to this large parking lot. On the hike, look for wildflowers and interesting geologic formations. When you return to your car, you may leave for the Guemes Channel Trail.   Instructions to Guemes Channel will be given out at the meeting place.   Easy to moderate

Hike - Conway Area Dike Walk

Wednesday, April 17, 2024 CONWAY-AREA DIKE WALK Hike up to 3.3 miles one way on the Conway area dike north towards Mount Vernon. Meet at 9 am to sign in at the parking area described below. You may leave when you return to your vehicle. Lunch at the Conway Pub & Eatery?  If the weather is clear there will be great views. Birds should be plentiful. From I-5 take exit 221 which is signposted by Conway and Lake McMurray. This is also the Pioneer Hwy (SR 534) which leads to Stanwood. Turn west toward Conway/Stanwood and very shortly (100 yds) turn right on Fir Island Rd into Conway. Go over the RR tracks and in 100 yds turn right on Dike Rd just before the bridge. Do not go over the South Fork of the Skagit River Bridge onto Fir Island! Parking is available on the left in 200 yds. north of the unsigned dike district building. Difficulty: Easy; no elevation gain

Hike - Baker River*

Wednesday, April 24, 2024 BAKER RIVER Hike along the Baker River to Sulfide Creek, entering the North Cascades National Park along the way. Dogs are not permitted on the National Park section of the trail. 5 miles round trip, 300 ft. el. gain. Meet at 8:30 a.m. on the east side of the Sedro-Woolley Food Pavilion parking lot. Federal Northwest Forest Pass* (parking permit) required. 1:30 pm return to trailhead if you do just the river hike; 2:30 pm return if you also walk south to Hidden Creek on the north Baker Lake Trail.

Get Membership Information

Skagit Audubon Society holds monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month except for the months of July and August. We meet at 7:00 pm at Padilla Bay Interpretive Center (Google map), 10441 Bayview-Edison Rd. Mount Vernon. Meetings are open to all.

The board of directors meets at the same location at 7:00 pm on the first Tuesday of each month, except for the months of July and August.
